The Best Apple Pie Recipe with a Crumb Topping and Homemade Pie Crust

Homemade apple pie with crumb topping and homemade pie crust by the New York Times

Joel and I have been making this apple pie recipe since our first year of marriage. We have perfected it over time, and we can confidently say this is our best version yet.

What makes it the best Apple Pie Recipe?

Our idea of the Best Apple Pie blends the perfect ratio between tart apples, a brown sugar base, mixed with a crumb topping, and just the right crust to layer underneath the entire piece. For this recipe, I used The New York Times Pie Crust and it was exquisite. It was so easy to make! I have stayed away from making my own pie crust previously because I have heard they are a bit of work to make. I am typically all about diving into everything handmade, but I do look for doing things handmade when they don't require too much prep work. This pie recipe is definitely the way to go. It was easy and very tasty.

I am using a pie dish that my Grandmother gifted to me, but I have linked a similar one here. The plates are from CB2 here and the silverware is vintage from Joel's Grandmother. I am linking some pie dishes I have had my eye on that look modern and beautiful to use when baking pies.

Apple Pie with Crumb Topping and Homemade Crust

Ingredients

  • Pie Mix -
  • 5 Granny Smith Apples (washed, peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
  • Hefty pinch of Nutmeg
  • 3 Tablespoons of All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 Cup of White Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup of Light Brown Sugar
  • 1 Homemade Pie Crust (I use a recipe by the New York Times)
  • Crumb top --
  • 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup of butter, melted

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 375 Degrees F
    2. Toss the apples in a large bowl with lemon juice.
    3. In a separate bowl, combine the pie mix dry ingredients then pour over apples and toss the apples to coat them evenly.
    4. Pour the apples into the prepared pie shell.
    5. Prepare your crumb top by melting the butter over the stove.
    6. While the butter is melting, combine the crumb top dry ingredients and sift until well-combined.
    7. Once the butter has melted, pour the butter into the crumb top dry ingredients and toss until all of the dry ingredients have combined forming round clusters.
    8. Crumble over the pie to evenly coat the top.
    9. Carefully place your pie in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes. If the edges are looking too brown, you can tear strips of aluminum foil to cover just the edges.
    10. Your pie will be done once the top is looking a deep golden brown.
    11. Once the pie has finished baking, carefully remove it from the oven and let it sit for 20 minutes so that the juices can finish setting.
    12. Serve with ice cream or homemade whipped cream!
